Before OPM, there was JPM

A 5 ounce hand-poured loaf bar from Jackson Precious Metals, the Ohio refinery founded in 1974 by Walter Luhrman and operated out of Jackson County, Ohio until 1985. The obverse carries JPM's signature flowing-script hallmark, with 5 OZ. and .999 FINE stamped beneath in clean serifed characters. The bar shows the chunky, rounded loaf profile and brushed top finish that JPM became known for — a mold widely used in the era, including for private-label work JPM did for local Ohio coin shops.

What makes JPM distinct among vintage refiners is that, unlike most of its contemporaries, the company didn't disappear during the Great Melt. Luhrman reorganized the operation into Ohio Precious Metals (OPM), which continues to refine gold and silver bullion today as a subsidiary of Elemetal LLC. JPM also produced bars under the Bajack, Bache, and Prudential brand names during its eleven-year run.

This particular example has been authenticated with the Sigma Metalytics PMV Pro and carries the hand-finished character that vintage pour collectors look for: a softly brushed obverse, naturally rolled edges, a sandcast-textured reverse with light age toning, and the irregular profile that only comes from a small-shop pour.

JPM bars are classified by collector reference VintagePouredBar.com as "very collectable, but not uncommon" — a designation that puts them in the sweet spot for new vintage collectors: a real piece of 1970s American refining history without the price ceiling of the rarest unicorns.
