The Bar
This is the Engelhard 10 oz in the 11th series "P" prefix — the wide, pressed landscape bar that has become one of the most recognizable vintage Engelhard formats. The obverse carries the "999+ FINE SILVER" purity and "10 TR. OZ." weight inscriptions above the iconic ENGELHARD nameplate set in its elongated boxed octagon, with the P-prefixed serial below. The "P" denotes Engelhard's Plainville, Massachusetts facility. The reverse is a flat machined finish.
Design elements are stamped incuse into the surface — the flat-field, wide-struck look that distinguishes the pressed bars from Engelhard's earlier hand-poured ingots. Collectors know this style as the "pillow top." Light toning consistent with age is present and, as with all vintage Engelhard silver, reflects natural oxidation rather than any defect.
Why It Matters
Engelhard exited the precious metals business in 2006 (acquired by BASF), ending decades as North America's preeminent silver refiner. The 11th series "P" bars were produced in quantity — an estimated 200,000 — making them among the more accessible vintage Engelhard 10 oz bars, while decades of melting have steadily reduced the surviving population. For collectors and stackers, they offer the Engelhard name and vintage pedigree at a fair premium over melt.
